Artist James Chase Transforms Parking Garage Into A Colorful Canvas In Downtown Manchester
MANCHESTER, NH - A parking garage on Hanover Street in downtown Manchester is getting a colorful facelift that is being completed by artist James Chase.
The mural titled “Greetings from Manchester” is one of many murals that Chase has painted in several locations around New England.
The mural was commissioned by Red Oak Apartment Homes which owns the parking garage and several properties on Hanover Street.
Chase is a mixed media artist who lives in Manchester and has participated in over 50 art exhibitions since 2009,
Chase is also the Director of Community Education and Visual Arts Faculty at the New Hampshire Institute of Art. He is also an Associate Professor of Art at New England College.
People passing by watched the vine-covered garage be cleaned and primed for the mural which was the first step taken to prepare “the canvas”.
After the surface was prepared Chase started transitioning the wall with a vast palette of colors applied using paint cans and airbrush.
Chase uses a rented lift to access the high points of the wall and does some of the painting at ground level.
As people walk by and talk to Chase, it has spurred conversations about the artwork, culture, and city matters.
The mural is expected to be finished in August and offers a bright visual welcome to Manchester as people walk down the busy street.
